Takachiho station is located in Takachiho town, which is located in northwest part of Miyazaki prefecture in Kyushu island. It is one of the stations of Takachiho Amaterasu Railway.
However, Takachiho Amaterasu Railway is not officially recognized as a railway company which operates regular passenger services but it is actually a heritage railway. Takachiho station was a terminal station of Takachiho Railway which existed till 2008.
Takachiho Railway was originally a Takachiho line of JNR; Japan National Railway, predecessor of JR group. The history of Takachiho line is quite short. Opened in 1972 and ended in 1987. Takachiho Railway suspended its services in 2005 due to Typhoon Nabi.
Currently Takachiho Amaterasu Railway is providing heritage train for tourists visiting Takachiho area between Takachiho and Amanoiwato stations.
