Kare-sansui

Kare-sansui(literally means dry landscape, usually referred as rock zen garden) is a style of Japanese garden without using water. Instead of using water, sand, stone and rock are used to show the landscape of mountain and river.

Probably most famous Kare-sansui is located at Ryoan-ji temple in Kyoto. The temple which belongs to Rinzai branch of Zen is a very popular tourist attraction in Kyoto, but not so famous as other temples, such as Golden pavilion(Kinkaku-ji temple) or Kiyomizu temple.

Kare-sansui can be seen at other numerous places in Japan, even out of temples. Starbucks Coffee Kyoto Uji Byodo-in Omote Sando is the one which you can enjoy both theri coffee and Kare-sansui.
