Nagamochi

Nagamochi

Nagamochi is a traditional wooden storage box to keep clothes and futon bedding inside. In case of moving or evacuation caused by a fire, nagamochi will be carried by two men with a long pole or pulled by single person by its wheels attached on the bottom of the box.

Therefore nagamochi can be considered as two functions - storage and trunk. Unfortunately outbreaks of fires were so easy during Edo period due to most of the people lived in wooden dwellings. Then, peoplen need to escape quickly carrying their valuables.

Now days nagamochi can be found only in museums or extremely old houses and many young people do not know what nagamochi is.
