Shin-Onomichi bridge

Shin-Onomichi bridge and view of Onomichi, Hiroshima

Shin-Onomichi bridge is one of the bridges of Nishiseto Expressway in Onomichi, Hiroshima prefecture. Nishiseto Expressway is widely known as Shimanami kaido(literally means island groups highway) by Japanese. It is one of the three expressways connecting Honshu island and Shikoku island. Nishiseto Expressway is the only bridge connecting Honshu and Shikoku which allows pedestrians and bicycles too. Shin-Onomichi literally means New Onomichi.

Shin-Onomichi bridge was built in 1995 and it is 546 meters long cable-stayed bridge, connecting Mukai-shima island and Honshu. Along this bridge, there is Onomichi bridge located 55 meters in the east. Although, pedestrian and cyclists can cross the older Onomichi bridge, Shin-Onomichi bridge is a limited-access road which only motor vehicles are allowed to use.

If you are planning to run Shimanami kaido on bicycle, you have to use Onomichi bridge or ferry between Onomichi and Mukai-shima island.
