Dazaifu Tenmangu

Dazaifu Temmangu Shrine

Dazaifu Tenmangu is a nationwide well known shrine located in Daizaifu city in Fukuoka prefecture in Kyushu island, not so far from the largest city in Kyushu; Fukuoka city,

This shrine was built to worship Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar, poet and politician lived in late 9th century. Distinguished politician Michizane climbed up to one of the highest rank of the imperial court but eventually lost to a political conflict and was demoted to Dazaifu as a head of the local administration officier.

After his death in Dazaifu, there were so many natural disasters and incidents occured, therefore the imperial court decided to built a new shrine in Daizaifu to worship Michizane. Michizane is considered as the god of education and thousands of students come from all over Japan to pray for the success of the entry exams.

Dazaifu Tenmangu can be reached by Fukuoka by Nishitetsu railway, largest private railway company in Kyushu which unfortunately Japan Rail Pass cannot be used.
